I was in treatment centers and halfway houses in the 80's. I did what they told me and followed their programs as far as they went. I always ended up in the same old place. Then in 1992 back in a recovery house once more, a couple fellows from AA came in and did a five week work shop on step 4. I did my first step 4 the Big Book way and followed with the rest of the steps. I have not found it necessary to drink since, 9 years. "It's in the book" "and it works"

When I got to AA in 1977 I wanted recovery so bad I was willing to do anything you AA's told me. I vigorously went about the the first three steps and you said if I didn't take four and five the way the book said I would not make it. I could not understand step four in the book and nobody could explain it to me so I tried two treatment center guides and the Alanon blueprint for success. Also a guide that was 350 questions. Then I wrote out forty five pages and tried to do a five with all my mess. I guess trying was helping me stay sober along with my meetings. I was very fortunate to be part of the group of twenty five men that started the 4th step study group in 1983.
As of this date I have been sober twenty five years and thank God for AA and all the steps that continue to give this Alcoholic an awesome life.
